Successful Delivery of the First Donation to Ukraine: Building Research Capacity Together

On Saturday, December 7, 2024, the first donation of scientific equipment from CERN, facilitated by the collaborative initiative of the EU-funded EURIZON project and the Copenhagen-based non-profit association RI.Logistica, successfully arrived in Kharkiv. This milestone marks a significant step in the “Ukraine Initiative,” which establishes a vital logistical pathway to aid Ukrainian research institutions in resuming operations amidst ongoing challenges.

RI.Logistica is proud to have played a key role in this effort, supporting the reconstruction and development of Ukraine’s research capacity.

The donated equipment, including computers from CERN, was transported from CERN, Switzerland, to the National Science Center (NSC) KIPT in Kharkiv, Ukraine. This humanitarian aid shipment was managed in compliance with international regulations as non-dual-use goods and coordinated by RI.Logistica in collaboration with several key partners.

Through the collaboration between RI.Logistica and EURIZON, European research institutions and universities are encouraged to register on an electronic platform that matches equipment requests from Ukrainian research institutes with surplus or available resources from European institutes. Once a match is identified, the items are consolidated and shipped. RI.Logistica and EURIZON ensure support not only for shipping costs but also manage logistical complexities, including customs clearance and VAT exemptions. This streamlined process provides an efficient and effective way to deliver vital resources to Ukrainian researchers.

Our logistics partner, 4PL Central Station, played a crucial role in managing the donation’s transportation booked withProsped ensured a smooth and timely delivery with their efficient service and excellent customer support. Additionally, Marsh Sweden insured the shipment, providing extra security for this vital mission.

Building the Future Together

As noted by Serguei Fomin from NSC KIPT, “We managed to find a really working channel for providing assistance to Ukrainian scientists in restoring the destroyed technical base of their laboratories, without waiting for the end of the war. This adds enthusiasm to us to work even more actively in this direction.”
