These visits help us identify standards, improve efficiency, and learn from real-world examples. By connecting across sites, we build a stronger, more unified RI:logistica community.

ESS

The RAL Shipping team would be delighted to host small groups and individual parties to discuss all things Shipping and Logistics.   RAL is a multi-disciplinary science facility and therefore we interact with most if not all of the other RI’s in some capacity, so this forms an important part of building a growing network and collaborations.

We are a small team, part of the Estates Department reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and we look after all the RAL Shipping requirements (Import, Exports and Domestic movements), we also help our other smaller sites and have plans to make Shipping a national function lead by my team in RAL.

As part of your visit, we can show you:

  • Our ways of Working – Brexit Issues etc.
  • Our Technology: including our NEW! Shipping System and Goods In Booking System
  • Customs Procedures (including IPR, OPR, Temporary shipments and C426 Certs)
  • Dangerous Goods Shipping and handling
  • Our Storage, Packing and logistics roles and responsibilities
  • Dual Use Items
  • Future Plans and structuring

At ESS, logistics operations are managed through a contracted 4PL logistics service provider. The logistics team consists of 4 office-based and 4 warehouse-based staff from the 4PL, working closely with 2 ESS logistics coordinators. Together, the team handles all inbound and outbound transports to and from ESS, as well as logistics between in-kind partners. The team also coordinates and schedules all delivery and unloading activities, including for shipments not directly booked by ESS.

We use JIRA to manage both external transport requests and internal site transports, and an EAM system for warehouse and asset management. Sustainability is a core focus, with CO₂ tracking and follow-up on recommended actions. A new TMS system is currently being implemented to improve efficiency and visibility.

We also have support for rigging assistance and a Dangerous Goods advisor. Compliance is managed through AEB system, which tracks dual-use items and ensures all relevant procedures are followed. The team is trained in ADR classes 1,3, as well as AITA.

If you visit ESS Logistics, we can offer insights and training into:

  • Inbound and outbound logistics flow, including delivery scheduling and unloading coordination
  • On-site transport operations
  • Goods receiving and warehouse handling
  • Dual-use item tracking (AEB system and routines)
  • Dangerous goods (DG) handling and advisory support
  • Rigging assistance services
  • Environmental and sustainability initiatives
